How to Make it Big as a DJ Response
July 5, 2008 by admin

So today I was tooling around the fresh page.com checking out what they had to offer and saw this post How to Make it Big as a DJ
This to me seems like a load of BS. I have been DJing for some time now and I can remember when I first started there were only 3 ways to get gigs.
1. Produce your own music that gets popular.
2. Throw your own parties/clubs.
3. Hope your friends throw paties/clubs and get them to book you.
And that is basically it.
The Fresh Page is claiming that you can make it big by paying them to put some mixes up on their site and by them promoting you. I doub’t it The Fresh Page only gets about 2,000 unique vistors per month to their website and I doubt many of those visitors are promoters or people in the know willing to pay some no name DJ to come out and play because they have a mix up.
This is especially true in this time period where DJ’s use software and computers rather than vinyl. Anymore a DJ doesn’t even have to know how to beatmatch or drop a record. Basic musical and DJ theory are out the window now that your computer can take care of everything for you. When listening to a mix how can you tell if it’s the talent of the DJ or just the software.
I think there possibly may be a 4th method on how to get gigs and I am struggling with myself wondering if I should share it…
I’m going to have to think about it maybe I will maybe I won’t because no one is doing it right now and it involves mad skills other than those needed to rock a party.

Hey guys, thanks for posting and mentioning our blog. I assure you however, that we don’t get 2000 visitors a month. Please don’t rely on a clumsy tool like compete.com to make a statement like that. TheFreshpage has been getting on average 100,000 unique visitors a month (many more page views & hits) and the site has been growing steadily over the past several years. The payments from dj’s is only to help us with the mass amount of bandwidth we have to pay for, it’s not cheap in Canada! It also helps keep really serious dj’s on our site (trust me, we used to get a lot of people who have used some software to put together a mix which has tracks which run into each other)
The team has been working their butts off only to give something back to the community, we love the music and that is where our heart is. If you have any feedback on how we can make the site better we always have our ears truly open. Please use our support comment form to give us this feedback!
We have a lot of industry ties to the big guys and close relations with one of our favorite labels - OM Records. So basically, many dj’s get to get some extra exposure through our site and we hope to improve this substantially as time goes by. It’d be awesome to get some of the amazing talent on our site into clubs and festivals.
Great blog, keep up the great work guys!

Hmm. This is making me think I do want to say I dig you website but I just didn’t like the way the article came off maybe it’s just me. I do want to make it clear though I think your site provides a valuable resource for House Music Fans everywhere.
MY THING IS THIS… WHO REALLY CARES? AT THIS POINT GREAT ARTISTS ARE AT WAR WITH WACK ARTIST. AND ITS ALL BECAUSE TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE IS SO THAT A PERSON DOESN’T HAVE TO SPEND 20 YEARS STUDYING AN ART FROM, AS I HAVE DONE, TO PRODUCES GREAT MUSIC.
AUDIO SYNC I DIG IT. THAT WAY I CAN SPEND MORE OF MY ENERGY HYPING UP THE CROWD. I’M NOT ON STAGE TRYING TO PROVE MYSELF TO OTHER DJ’S, I’M THERE TO MAKE THE PEOPLE DANCE TIL THEY’RE FEET FALL OFF.
WITH STEP SEQUENCING, A KAT DOESN’T HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO PLAY A KEYBOARD, BASS, DRUMS OR EVEN KNOW ANYBODY WHO DOES. WITH AUDIO-TUNE, KATS LIKE KANYE WEST CAN MAKE A R&B ALBUM, AND THEY CAN’T SING A LICK. WHAT DOES IT MATTER REALLY? NOTHING. IT MEANS THAT ALL THE REAL ARTIST HAVE TO TAKE THIS ART FORM UPON THEIR SHOULDERS AND PUSH THE ART FORM FURTHER.
